Hot-Dip Galvanized 19W4 Steel Grating: Loads, Drainage and Service Life

2026-10-12

19W4 grating puts a bearing bar every 1-3/16 in (30.2 mm), welded to twisted cross bars every 4 in (101.6 mm), then dips the panel in molten zinc. It is the most installed platform grating in the world. This page covers what engineers ask before writing the specification: load behaviour, drainage, corrosion life, and what must appear on the order.

Where 19W4 Earns Its Keep

· Industrial platforms and mezzanines — sprinkler water passes through, and single panels lift out for access.

· Walkways and catwalks — about a third the weight of checker plate at equal deflection.

· Machine bases and access decks — local strength plus ventilation around hot equipment.

· Trench covers and stair treads — open grid takes storm water and washdown; tread bars get a serrated or nosed edge.

Will It Carry the Load?

Two checks decide it. Uniform load is settled by bar size and span. Concentrated load is the one that catches people out: a pallet jack wheel may sit on just two bearing bars, and 4 in cross bar spacing shares little of it sideways.

Where carts run regularly, specify cross bars at 2 in (type 19-W-2) or step up the bar depth. Welded construction handles both; the "4" in the code is the part to change.

Stiffness per foot of width runs at roughly 1.68 × bar thickness × bar depth² (in³/ft).

Orientation is the most common ordering mistake. Bearing bars must run across the supports, perpendicular to the span. Where the drawing does not say which way they run, panels arrive unusable.

Will It Drain?

At a 3/16 in bar the deck is 79% open. Water, oil and debris pass straight through, so the surface dries quickly. Air and light pass too, and sprinkler discharge reaches the level below.

A 1-3/16 in slot is not heel-proof: nuts and tools fall through, and small wheels catch. Use a closer mesh or a plate insert where people walk underneath or the deck is public. 19W4 misses the 13 mm opening limit set in accessible-route standards.

How Long Will the Galvanizing Last?

Hot-dip galvanizing is applied after fabrication, so welds, cut ends and bar sides are coated. The zinc bonds metallurgically to the steel rather than sitting on it as paint.

Typical average coating quoted for grating is 610 g/m² (about 85 µm). One detail to watch: under ASTM A123 and ISO 1461 the minimum depends on how thick the bar is, and thin bars sit in a lower category. Write the coating mass into the order instead of relying on a general figure.

Life then depends on atmosphere. Indicative zinc loss rates per ISO 9224:

Category

Typical environment

Zinc loss (µm/yr)

C2

Dry indoor, low humidity

up to 0.7

C3

Urban and light industrial, moderate humidity

0.7-2.1

C4

Coastal or chemical plant, high humidity

2.1-4.2

C5

High salinity, aggressive industrial

4.2-8.4

Divide the coating thickness by the rate for an indicative interval to first maintenance. Those figures are guidance, not a warranty; how often the deck gets wet drives life most.

What Happens When You Cut It?

Cutting, drilling and notching must happen before galvanizing. Once a panel is galvanized:

· Band every cut end — a flat bar welded across the ends restores the load path and closes the open slots.

· Frame all openings — every hole for a pipe or column gets a frame on all four sides.

· Repair damaged zinc with a zinc-rich compound to ASTM A780, never ordinary paint. Check the dry-film zinc content on the data sheet.

· Fix panels with saddle clips or weld lugs, at least four per panel, in a matching finish.

What Goes on the Purchase Order

One clear line prevents most problems:

Welded steel grating, type 19-W-4, bearing bars 1-1/4 in x 3/16 in, plain surface, bearing bars across the span, hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 minimum 610 g/m², panels 3 ft x 24 ft, all cut edges banded, four saddle clips per panel.

Then confirm eight points before quoting: type and cross bar spacing (19-W-4 or 19-W-2); bearing bar size; span direction and panel size; plain or serrated; galvanizing standard and coating mass; edge treatment; clip type and quantity; quantity in m² plus destination port.

Shipping note. At 44 kg/m² 19W4 is usually weight-limited rather than height-limited in a 20 GP container, around 400-500 m² depending on bar size and payload. Lighter bar sizes fill the height first. A loading plan goes out with every quote.
